Counselling Courses and Psychotherapy Courses >> The Most Important Questions To Ask Yourself and Your Clients

There are lots of counselling and psychotherapy courses to choose from but one of the reasons why so many people decide to learn hypnotherapy with us first, is because we start our training by asking one of the most important questions in therapy.

When researching Counselling Courses and Psychotherapy Courses ask yourself ‘what do your therapy clients really want?’

Do they really want counselling, therapy, coaching or to be hypnotised? Well I would say that they don’t. What your clients really want isn’t about modalities, qualifications, or about the therapies that make the headlines.

What clients really want is a positive outcome from therapy and a way to manage the ups and downs life throws at them.

And when we step away from the language of therapy and we ask our clients what do they really want, they tell us they want to

  • Let their story be heard and speak their truth
  • Be listened to and understood
  • Put the past behind them
  • Eliminate self sabotage
  • Develop a positive ‘can do’ attitude
  • Learn skills to manage future problems without getting down about them.

That might seem like a lot but it’s not. Not really. Because we all want the same things.  It doesn’t matter whether we are on the couch as a client or sitting in the chair working as the therapist.

Therapists Have The Advantage

We all want the same things in life.  But as therapists we have the advantage.  During our training we get to learn all the skills required to get what we want out of our life.  We learn all of the skills and we apply them to our own life before we start doing therapy on our clients.  This is one of the biggest personal benefits of training to be a therapist.

Plus we get to make a living by sharing those skills with our clients and helping to make the world a better place.

And to become a great therapist the process has to start with you.  I can’t speak for other course providers but time and time again I see my own students get personal benefit from hypnotherapy and mind coaching.  I see them start their career with a deep sense of knowing of just how simple but powerfully effective hypnotherapy and mind coaching can be.

Next Question: ‘What makes our hypnotherapy course different from counselling and psychotherapy courses?’

There are three things that we do a little differently.

#1 We move from talking into taking action – we encourage imperfect action. Things don’t have to be perfect they just have to be moving in the right direction.

#2  We create clearly defined outcomes and test the therapy to make sure our clients are making progress.

#3 We help our clients to understand that there’s no such thing as failure only feedback, so we create a feedback loop so that our clients keep us informed so we can keep on sharing the tools and techniques they need to live a pleasant, engaged and meaningful life.

Next question >> ‘How Do YOU Deliver Clearly Defined Outcomes?’

Well to get to those three powerful outcomes we start by asking questions that are framed in a certain way.

When I teach hypnotherapy and mind coaching on my double diploma course, there is ONE question that has the power to unlock our clients hidden resources. This simple question helps them to understand where they are now and where they want to go.

This ONE question will unlock your ability to be the best therapist that you can be!

That question is a three letter word, that is often forgotten about because WHAT? and WHY? are often asked first.  Now don’t get me wrong…

WHAT is an important question to ask because it will reveal the story.  The sequence of events that happened and what brought them here to have therapy with you.

WHY is an odd question?  It’s often seen as confrontational and can cause our clients to feel they must defend their actions.

WHY did you do that? Why did you think that way? Why did that upset you?

Now while they are all valid questions they can cause our clients to respond in a defensive way.

Get Into The HOW now!

Whereas the softer gentler question HOW? is much more thoughtful and reflective in nature.

How did it start? How does it happen? How does it make you feel?

You see how reveals the process. It reveals the symptoms and the sequence of events behind the challenge.

How gives us direct access to the building blocks of the problem and it also gives us direct access to the building blocks of the solution.

Let me explain what that means, when clients answer how, they share the thoughts, the feelings and the actions or behaviours that underpin the problem.

And when we ask them how do they want to change?  How do they want to think differently, feel differently and act differently, then those answers help define the solution.

So HOW reveals very important information.  Once we know HOW, you can use your skill as a therapist and find the right interventions, tool or technique or exercise to help your clients.

On our double diploma in hypnotherapy and mind coaching my students learn a wide range of interventions from positive psychology, cognitive behavioural therapy, rational emotional behavioural therapy, neuro linguistic programming, mindfulness based stress reduction and willpower management and they are underpinned by best practice hypnotherapy.

In fact on our Triple Diploma in Hypnotherapy, Mind Coaching and Online Therapy course you will learn a total of 101 therapy interventions – now if that sounds like too much work – don’t worry it isn’t. All of the interventions have been put into a members area that you can access from your phone or your tablet. There you’ll have the audio recording of the intervention together with the script. So you can scroll through them all and find the right one, for the client you are working with now.

Another thing to know is that the 101 Interventions aren’t randomly put together. They are categorised into ten tools to help your clients get the most from their therapeutic journey with you.

These 10 tools provide a handy framework for you to be able to deliver great therapy consistently to your clients.  And if you’d like to see if it will work for you then I’ve put together a short video and a longer video that will take you through the 10 Tools Process.
