Therapy School with Susan Wallace

Welcome to Therapy School

My name is Susan Wallace and I help coaches, therapists and healers to be the best, have the best and give their best to their clients.

I run the Double Diploma in Strategic Hypnotherapy and Mind Coaching course in Dublin and Limerick.

Every year I witness how my graduates catapult themselves into a successful and rewarding therapy career.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have any therapy skills or qualifications yet, or if you already are a practicing counsellor or psychotherapist, you’ll find my teaching style will ensure that no one gets left behind.

Benefits of Learning These Skills Are Enormous

  • You’ll have a set of tools to help people to push past their problems.
  • You’ll make a big difference by doing little things to help the people you love.
  • You’ll become more confident in yourself and your ability to help.
  • You’ll empower the people you love to take ownership of their problems.
  • You’ll feel a deep sense of personal satisfaction that you are no longer helpless but helpful no matter what challenge may arise in life.

#1 Relax and Let Go

Discover how to help someone experiencing an anxiety attack to feel calm, relaxed and confident quickly and easily.  Whether it’s your kids getting ready for exams, friends going through a rough patch in a relationship or someone you love who is losing control because of the choices they have made.

Breath is the most powerful communication system in our body.  It reacts much faster than our thoughts.  In mere nano-seconds our breath can alter the chemistry in our blood stream.

When you are stressed, your body goes into high alert and your survival response is triggered. Cortisol and other stress hormones flood your blood stream and blood flow is restricted from non-essential organs.

We have to offset the barrage of stress with a relaxation response

Breath is the non-verbal communication system that alerts our body to be calm and relaxed or anxious and stressed.

Breath plus Anchor

We can use a full breath to anchor us to a place of relaxation.

What is an anchor?  It stabilises a ship and stops it drifting off course.

Why control our breathing?  We have no control over the external events in our life, but we do have control over the internal events.

Group Discussion

Think of the kind of problem you’d like to work on for yourself or someone else.  Discuss and share with your group.

On the Double Diploma Course You Will Learn the 10 Tools Used By Talented Therapists

To help someone overcome that challenge tell me how many of these processes would be essential?

Tool 1:  Access the Control Centre of the Mind
Tool 2:  Ask Revealing Questions
Tool 3:  Unlock Personal Power with the Master Keys
Tool 4:  Transform Fear and Anxiety
Tool 5:  Reframe the Past with Regression Therapy
Tool 6:  Restructure Thinking and End Self Sabotage
Tool 7:  Develop Positive Patterns of Action with NLP
Tool 8:  Manage Willpower and Surf the Urge to Prevent Relapse
Tool 9:  Buffer against Depression with Positive Psychology
Tool 10: Manifest Abundance and Prosperity in your Life

Rapid Relaxation Training

What do you think you need to help you overcome this problem?

For example, is it more confidence, relaxation etc.

So if you have more confidence do you think things would improve?

Today I can help you access that confidence and I’d like for you to have a way to access it later.  To do that we can create what we call an anchor.

An anchor is something you do (maybe with your hands) and where you take what we call a significant breath.

What would work for you?

On a scale of one to ten, how ____________ do you want to feel?

#2 Manage Anxiety

Anxiety is caused by unhelpful thinking patterns.  Discover how to change the way people think so they can stop the vicious cycle of anxiety.

So now you can help someone experience rapid physical relaxation.  But that may not be enough.  Problems exist in a vicious cycle of thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

In hypnotherapy and mind coaching we aim to interrupt that vicious cycle and to create a virtuous cycle.

We can’t control external events but we can control how they affect us and how they make us think, feel and act.

What kinds of thoughts sabotage your success?

Let’s take a look at some of the most effective processes to manage sabotaging thoughts.

Stop! Think. Act

Traffic lights are signals to remind us to STOP. We can use the moments we spend waiting by connecting with our feelings and monitoring our mood.  If we are feeling a little out of sorts we can use the time to STOP, THINK and ACT.

STOP!

What am I feeling?

What is the problem here?

THINK!

What can I do to tackle it?

Who can help me?

How will doing this benefit me?

ACT!

What is the first thing I need to do?

What is the second thing I need to do?

#3 End Self Sabotage

You know that we all sabotage ourselves from time to time.  You see your partner, your kids and your friends do great for a while and then watch them as they make the same old mistakes over and over again.   But it doesn’t have to be that way, there is a simple but highly effective process that you can learn and teach others to help end self-sabotage today.

Going Around In Circles Going Nowhere Fast

‘You see the reason why you haven’t been able to solve this problem is because it is stored in a different part of your mind. This part is called your subconscious.

Your subconscious controls all the things in your body that you don’t have to think about such as breathing, blinking, your heart beat.

But more than that, it even regulates your thoughts and feelings and behaviours.  That’s why there are parts of your problem that just seem to happen automatically. It’s as if you are on auto-pilot.

Now I know that you’ve been trying very hard to make progress.  But what most people don’t realise is that when you are trying to fix it, you only have access to your conscious mind and that part of your mind can’t fix the problem, because the problem has gone unconscious, it’s in your subconscious mind.”

To access the subconscious mind, we do the work though hypnosis.  We can use a wide range of interventions and techniques from

  • Positive Psychology
  • Rational Emotional Behavioural Therapy
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Neuro Linguistic Programming
  • Solutions Focused Psychotherapy
  • Inner Child Work
  • Regression Therapy

The Missing Link – Accessing the Subconscious

Most other forms of therapy don’t spend time, deeply communicating the positive effects of therapy with the subconscious mind.  They don’t create a space to reflect on how effective these changes will be and how they will have a positive knock on effect on our clients and their lives, their self belief, their confidence and their relationship with the wider world.

Old fashioned suggestions >>Script was something given to people by their doctor.  It explained how the medicine would work.  Suggestion caused early medicines to work above placebo level.

Script is series of suggestions a hypnotherapist gives to a client to communicate how effective therapy will be.

No contra-indications and only positive side effects.

Mind Coaching

Mind Coaching is the non-trance aspect of hypnotherapy where we teach our clients how to use more of their mind to help overcome daily challenges.

It gives you the therapist the opportunity to give back to your clients and increase their self reliance.

Group Discussion:  How could Mind Coaching help your clients or the people you care about?

#4 Let Go Of The Past

We all know people who just can’t move on. The events of the past colour their judgement and stop them from living fully in the present.  You’ll learn how to help yourself and others reframe the past as a powerful learning resource that will make their future much better than their past.

  • Unfortunate victim or ingenious survivor
  • Witnessing or Reliving?
  • Inner ‘child’ is a very gentle but highly effective form of regression therapy
Imagine being able to visit your past younger self… and give him/her the love, wisdom and support they needed back then…

What’s Your Super Power?

Your past is a powerful resource you carry inside you, it helps you discover and use your Super Power.

Your super power isn’t something you are born with.  It’s something that is created by you.  It’s forged in the fires of adversity, misfortune and troubled times.  It’s the strength, resilience, wisdom and understanding you gain by overcome adversity.

Using your Super Power is what will help you become a heart centred therapist.

#5 Develop A Lucky Personality

So many of us grew up with a scarcity mind-set and thought abundance was for other people.

We believed that good things and opportunities weren’t for people like us.  However, it’s now been scientifically proven that luck is a character trait that can be developed so that you are more open to grab opportunities and develop an abundance mind-set as you move through life.

Let’s Map Out Your Journey As a Heart Centred Therapist

You are here because you want to help others and I hope you can now see why hypnotherapy and mind coaching are two essential skills.

Let’s use a SYSTEM

On a sheet of A4 paper draw a picture of a mountain.

At the top of the mountain write down a goal you want to achieve.  Every small step you take helps you to reach the top.

Imagine you are at the bottom of the mountain and describe the problem.  Draw yourself in proportion to how big you think the challenge is.

Imagine you have achieved your goal and you are at the top of the mountain.  Visualise your life without the problem.

What would it look like?
What would you think, feel and do differently?
How would others respond to you?

Ok, what action do you need to take?
Write down between three and five key things you need to do to reach the top of the mountain and your goal.

Position those things where they need to be.
First one close to the bottom.
Place the middle one half way up the mountain and the others where you think they need to be.

  • What are the tools you need?  These are resources you will need to climb this mountain.
  • What resources do you have?  What ones do you need?
  • Who can help you? How can they help?

Slippery slope

  • What are the potential problems?
  • What is likely to cause you to slip-up or lose your footing?
  • Ask the “what if’s” and remember to answer them.

Rewards

  • How can you reward yourself for every milestone you reach?
  • Write down the rewards you’ll give yourself to celebrate your success.
  • Commit to acknowledging your progress and always appreciate how you overcame the difficulties along the way.

Obstacles

What’s standing in your way?

What is stopping you from investing in yourself and giving yourself future security and peace of mind that comes from knowing you have the skills not just to help yourself, your family but your wider community and to develop a rewarding career?

What Does Success Look Like?

  • Imagine you have already reached the top, how will you know your problem is solved?
  • What will you do that will be different?
  • What will you think that is different?
  • What will you feel that will be different from the way you think now?
  • How will others know that the problem is solved?

Step Back and Review

Now that you have decided on the action you need to take, reconsider how big the mountain is and notice how achievable your goal is now know the specific steps to take and you have a way to reward your efforts and manage any set-backs.

Are You Ready To Take The Next Step?

Join me Susan Wallace on the Double Diploma in Hypnotherapy and Mind Coaching in Dublin or Limerick this Autumn.

Why Learn Hypnotherapy Before Counselling or Psychotherapy

If you are thinking of training to be a therapist or a coach then learning hypnotherapy first makes sense.

The reason for this is that qualifying in hypnotherapy and mind coaching only takes one year.  Whereas qualifying in counselling and psychotherapy takes between three and five years.

By learning hypnotherapy first, most students use their earnings from hypnotherapy clients to pay for their counselling or psychotherapy course.
